Literacy is defined as the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves continued learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to fully participate in the wider society. Literacy also refers to the technological gap. Approximately one billion, or 26 percent of the world’s adult population is illiterate, two-thirds of whom are women.
