A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. Refugees fear persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. They are unable or unwilling to return home. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries. An Internationally Displaced Person (IDP) is one who has fled their home for the same reasons as a refugee but remains in his or her home country and has not crossed international borders. The global refugee and displaced people crisis affects every continent and almost every country.
